2.5 Standby Heating Devices

In accordance with NFPA 110, Cummins NPower rec-

ommends installing generator sets (life safety sys-

tems) equipped with engine jacket water coolant

heaters in locations where the minimum ambient tem-

perature is below 4°C (40°F). NFPA also requires that

the engine jacket water coolant be maintained at a

minimum of 32°C (90°F) and, for most applications,

accept the emergency load in 10 seconds or less.

The Engine Cold (Code 1435) message, in conjunc-

tion with illumination of the warning light is provided to

meet the requirements of NFPA 110. The engine cold

sensing logic initiates a warning when the engine

jacket water coolant temperature falls below 21°C

(70°F). In applications where the ambient tempera-

ture falls below 4°C (40°F), a cold engine may be

indicated even though the coolant heaters are con-

nected. Under these conditions, although the genera-

tor set may start, it may not be able to accept load

within 10 seconds. When this condition occurs, check

the coolant heaters for proper operation. If the

coolant heaters are operating properly, other precau-

tions may be necessary to warm the engine before

applying a load.

2.6 Product Modifications

Agency certified products purchased from Cummins

NPower comply only with those specific requirements

and as noted on company product specification

sheets. Subsequent modifications must meet com-

monly accepted engineering practices and/or local,

state and national codes and standards. Product

modifications must be submitted to the local authority

having jurisdiction for approval.
